Everyone wants to get into an IIT, but not everyone who takes the JEE Main exam succeeds. Their JEE Mains percentile determines a candidate’s eligibility to take the JEE Advanced exam.

A candidate must score higher than the NTA-determined cutoff percentage for the JEE Main 2024 exam to qualify for the JEE Advanced 2024 exam. A good JEE Main score varies from student to student, depending on the college they want to attend. A higher JEE Main score is required for admission to one of the best NITs than one of the best IIITs. As a result, a student’s JEE Main score is influenced by the college they attend.

Good JEE Mains Score And Its Significance

As mentioned above, JEE Mains good score has different meanings for different individuals. A score of 180 or more is good if someone wants to get admitted into a decent private engineering college. However, those candidates who wish to sit in JEE Advanced must obtain a higher score. Only the top 2,50,000 exam qualifiers will be able to take the JEE Advanced. To put it another way, a high JEE Main score qualifies you for the JEE Advanced exam. A JEE Main score of 250 or higher is regarded as good and a JEE Mains score of 85-95 percentile is ideal for getting into NITs and IITs through the exam. Candidates must also be in the top 15,000 to 20,000 ranks to be accepted into the best NITs and IITs.

The JEE Mains test percentile or score required to qualify for JEE Advanced was high in previous years. The following tables represent JEE Mains rank and percentile range.

JEE Mains Normalisation And Percentile

After comparing their JEE Main scores to the percentile, aspirants frequently look for the normalization technique. After aggregating a candidate’s raw grades, NTA uses a normalization formula to determine their percentile rank in Maths, Chemistry, and Physics. This percentile score is also used to determine the JEE Main merit list.

The percentile score is calculated to the seventh decimal place to avoid any potential ties. It is calculated only after completing the normalisation method for each session on a scale of 100 to 0.

Candidates who have taken the JEE Main exam can calculate their relative merit using the JEE Main Percentile Score. The percentile represents a candidate’s performance in comparison to the other candidates. The 90th percentile in JEE Main, for example, indicates that the candidate outperformed 90 percent of all candidates who took JEE Main.

JEE Main Important Topics

The following formula is used to calculate the JEE Main percentile:

100 x (The number of candidates whose raw session score is equal to or less than the candidate’s total score) / (The total number of candidates who participated in that session). This percentile formula is exact for calculating marks for each section.

In the previous JEE Main, B.E./B.Tech. Carried 360 marks, while B.Arch/ B.Planning totalled 390 marks. JEE Mains exam section-wise breakdown is given below:

JEE Main B.E/B.Tech Paper

Subjects Maximum Questions to Answer Marks
Physics 25 100
Chemistry 25 100
Mathematics 25 100
Total 75 300

JEE Main B. Arch Paper

Subjects Maximum Questions to Answer Marks
Mathematics 25 100
Aptitude 50 200
Drawing 2 100
Total 77 400

JEE Main B. Planning Paper

Subjects Maximum Questions to Answer Marks
Mathematics 25 100
Aptitude 50 200
Planning 25 100
Total 100 400

Guidelines for JEE Main Marks Versus Percentile Tie Breakers

In addition to JEE Main scores vs percentile, candidates would like to learn about JEE Main tiebreaker procedures. These rules take place when more than one applicant has the same percentile.

  • If a candidate achieves a higher percentile score in mathematics, their rank will rise.
  • If there is a tie for first place in mathematics, it will be awarded to the student with the highest physics percentile.
  • If the tie remains the same, the candidate with the higher Chemistry score will be ranked higher overall.
  • In a tie, the older candidate will take precedence.
  • The best results from both sessions will calculate the final JEE main score. As a result, the same factors will determine the final score and ranks.

Marking Schemes And Scoring Good Marks in JEE Mains

If the format of JEE Main is followed, this paper will have a maximum possible score of 300 marks. With a three-hour time limit, there will be 75 questions to answer from a total of 90 (Physics, Chemistry, and Maths). Each subject would have 20 MCQs, each with one correct answer, and a total of 5 questions out of 10 to be attempted. All questions would be evaluated as follows: +4 for correct answers, -1 for incorrect answers, and 0 for not attempted questions.

Although 65-80 is considered good in the JEE Mains exam for all three primary papers, i.e. PCM. However, it’s always better to target more. Here are some preparation strategies that can help students ace the exam fearlessly.

JEE Main Chemistry

Students should allow themselves 3 hours a week before the exam to revise organic and inorganic concepts in addition to 1hour of physical chemistry revisions. Chemistry contains a few simple questions, and if students can answer them in the first hour, they may feel more confident. However, the primary focus should be on understanding the given syllabus and the ability to apply concepts. Practice the most pertinent questions to improve your time management abilities every day.

Chemical equilibrium, electrochemistry, and molecular theory are all topics that require your full attention. When studying organic chemistry, pay attention to stereochemistry, GOC (General Organic Chemistry), and functional group analysis. This field relies heavily on theoretical and applied structural, process, and application problems. In addition, students must pay close attention to chemical bonding and coordination issues. Particular attention should be paid to biomolecules, chemistry in everyday life, and environmental chemistry. NCERT should be studied carefully because JEE Main Chemistry is entirely based on it.

JEE Main Maths

Those who want the most variety in their JEE questions should focus on topics like Vectors and 3-D rather than Probability or Indefinite Integration. Every year, 2-3 questions are posed from the chapter Complex Number. As a result, mastering complex numbers, vectors, 3-D geometry, and the definite integral should be a top priority. Additionally, during the previous year’s exam, the emphasis was placed on Algebra, Calculus, and Coordinate Geometry topics. So, pay more attention to it.

Despite its lower weight on the exam, trigonometry is an essential part, so do not forget to memorize its equations. This one is a high-scoring topic in mathematics. To get a few extra marks, study topics like Mathematical Reasoning, Determinants, Statistics, and Mathematical Induction. Review previous years’ JEE Main Maths papers and sample test papers to become acquainted with the exam format.

JEE Main Physics

Most experts believe that JEE Main Physics Mechanics is one of the lower-scoring topics in Physics. However, this is the topic that accounts for the majority of the marks on the JEE Main. As a result, ignoring this topic is almost impossible. To improve your score, try

FAQs

1. Is it okay to check the solution without attempting the question?

When students find a question difficult, they prefer to move on to the solution. It is never a good idea to act in this manner. If they continue on this path, they will become increasingly reliant on the Solutions. Instead, students should attempt the problems for at least 15 minutes before consulting the solutions.

2. How knowing the exam format can lend me better marks in Physics in JEE Mains?

While preparing for the exam, students should be familiar with the JEE Main exam pattern and focus on the physics sections that carry the most exam weightage. This will give students a better idea of the questions they can expect on the exam.

3. Are the marking scheme and cut-off of JEE Mains the same as the previous year? Or have they changed?

For each correct answer in the JEE Main exam, four marks will be awarded, whereas one negative mark will be given for the incorrect ones. The weighting and marking scheme for each question have remained consistent over time. On the other hand, cutoffs for admission are determined by factors such as the difficulty of the JEE Main exam, the number of available seats, the number of applicants who appear for the exam, and, finally, the performance of individual applicants.

4. In JEE Main, are individual category ranks distinct from the All-India Rank (AIR)?

Yes, the JEE Main AIR Rankings and the Category Ranks are separate in the rankings. The All India Rank of a candidate represents their position among all students in the country. In contrast, the Category Rank represents students from a specific group, such as those from the SC, ST, OBC, or EWS.

5. What resources should I follow during my JEE preparations?

Books and study materials that help shape your conceptual knowledge should be used while preparing for the JEE (Main). JEE Mains official website has sample papers that you can easily download. For additional preparation, one can turn to reputable sources that provide multiple mock exam papers to become acquainted with the actual JEE Main pattern. Additionally, it is recommended to practise and get familiar with Computer-Based Tests as much as possible.

Conclusion

Although a JEE Mains score ranges between 180-250, since not everyone wishes to attend the same university, what constitutes a “good” JEE Main score differs from person to person. If your primary goal is to qualify for JEE Advanced and don’t care about your JEE Main score, an “excellent” JEE Main score may mean something entirely different. Moreover, a good JEE Main score varies yearly for several reasons. Because of the pandemic’s rapid spread, the cutoff scores for JEE Main have changed several times. But it’s always best to try to achieve as much as possible. Honesty, handwork, and the right strategy can lead you toward your dream life. So, keep doing your best!
