GPS tolling

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is on deliberation with stakeholders to introduce GPS-based toll collection on various routes across India with an aim to cut toll booth congestion.
  • Once implemented successfully, the Global Positioning System (GPS) tolling will replace the current FASTag system.
  • FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it or toll owner.

Working mechanism of GPS tolling:

  • The primary objective of the GPS tolling system is to alleviate congestion at toll booths by entirely phasing out physical toll booths nationwide in the future.
  • The operational mechanism involves the elimination of queues at toll booths and the need for vehicles to wait at the toll booths.
  • Under the GPS TOLLING the system employs geo-fencing on highways which determines the vehicle’s entry and exit using the GPS device integrated into the vehicle.
  • The software embedded will trigger a response when a vehicle enters or exits a specific area thus eliminating the necessity for vehicles to stop at toll plazas.
  • According to the current proposal by NHAI, vehicles must be equipped with the GPS devices.
  • While new vehicles come with built-in GPS devices, older vehicles need to install them in order to make them operative under the scheme.
  • Apart from this, there is an exploration of an alternative approach by NHAI which involves automatic number plate recognition cameras for tracking vehicle entry and exit thus eliminating the need for GPS devices and allowing toll collection on the go.
  • However, it has raised some privacy concerns regarding the location data and tracking.

About Geo fencing:

  • A geofencerefers to the virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area.
  • A geofence can either be dynamically generated like in a radius around a point location or match a predefined set of boundaries like such as school zones or neighborhood boundaries.
  • The use of a geofence is called as geofencing.
