Why in news ?

Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to Lachit Borphukan on Lachit Diwas.


  • Lachit borphukan(1622-1672), was a commander and Borphukan, in the Ahom kingdom located in the present day Assam.
  • Lachit Barphukan, who was born on November 24, 1622, was Momai Tamuli Borbarua’s youngest child.
  • He was an excellent military leader who knew the Brahmaputra valley’s geography and the nearby hills like the back of his hand.
  • He was also given administrative, judicial, and military duties as one of the five Borphukans of the Ahom kingdom by King Charadhwaj Singha.
  • Lachit Barphukan is often referred to as the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj of northeast India.

What is meant by Borphukan ?

  • Borphukan was one of the five patra mantris in the Ahom kingdom, a position that was created by the Ahom king prataap sangha.
  • He was known for his leadership in the Battle of Saraighat which was happened in 1671.
  • Lachit Borphukan represents Assamese resistance against foreign invaders under all circumstances.
  • He has long been a symbol of the Assamese people’s courage, bravery, and intelligence.

About Battle of Saraighat:

  • It was fought on the mighty banks of river Brahmputra in Guwahati in 1671.
  • In this war the Ahom General Lachit Borphukan successfully resisted the Mughal army invasion led by Raja Ram Singh-I.
  • While the Mughals were at the height of their power, they were unable to consolidate their rule in Assam and the Northeast.
  • Despite 17 attempts to conquer Assam, the Mughals failed each time. Marshals like Veer Lachit Barphukan kept Assam from falling to the invaders. 


  • In addition to observing November 24 as Lachit Divas, the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad has been presenting the Mahabir Lachit Award to deserving Assamese notables since 1999, and since 1999, the National Defence Academy’s best graduating cadet has received the Lachit Borphukan gold medal.
